Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure for your skin that induces the production of collagen, a structural protein. You lose collagen with age, which is a major cause of wrinkles and other signs of skin vitality decline.

Interestingly, microneedling works by causing small injuries in your skin. Tiny needles penetrate the epidermis during the therapy, and your skin heals them with collagen all on its own. Dr. Ramos and her team offer you a topical numbing agent first, so you aren’t uncomfortable during the process.

They also offer microneedling with radiofrequency, which further enhances the healing process that takes place within your skin. Radiofrequency goes deeper than the needles and causes healing in layers below the surface.

Another add-on for microneedling is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is full of growth factors and comes from a sample of your blood. It accelerates the healing process that microneedling initiates.

What does microneedling treat?

Microneedling treats a variety of skin concerns that often gather on the surface with age. Aging skin tends to be weaker and more prone to damage than younger skin, and you can see the evidence. With microneedling, you can minimize or eliminate:

  • Photodamage
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Scars from injuries
  • Acne scars
  • Roughness
  • Dryness
  • Large pores

After your skin heals from microneedling, you notice more smoothness and a more even tone. It also gets tighter and firmer, and you can target the face, neck, or body.

How many microneedling treatments do I need?

You might see mild improvements after a single microneedling session, but getting the most out of the treatment requires multiple sessions. Your provider evaluates your skin during your consultation to determine how many sessions are appropriate.

Most individuals require 3-4 microneedling sessions for the drastic improvements they want to see. These sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart from one another for healing. Optimal results appear around three months after the final treatment session.

What does my skin need after microneedling?

Your skin needs a little aftercare when you finish a microneedling treatment. Your provider applies a soothing ointment right away, and you should avoid applying makeup to the treated skin for at least a few hours.

You don’t have to refrain from your normal activities, but you can expect some swelling and redness for the first 12-24 hours.

Microneedling can rejuvenate mature skin so that you have fewer wrinkles and surface irregularities. If you’re interested in experiencing the many benefits of microneedling, call the office of Dr. Susanne Ramos or request a consultation online today.
