A Pap smear is one of the most important tools we use to maintain your reproductive health. Its primary goal is to look for changes in the cells of the cervix that could potentially lead to cancer if left untreated.
If you receive a call from our office stating that your results were "abnormal," it’s completely normal to feel a sense of worry. However, it’s also important to remember that an abnormal result rarely means you have cancer.
At Ramos Women's Wellness in Santa Barbara, CA, we prioritize your peace of mind. Our team is dedicated to explaining your results clearly and ensuring you receive the appropriate follow-up care in a relaxed environment.
An abnormal result simply means that the lab found cells that do not look exactly as they should. This can be caused by many things other than precancerous changes. For example, a simple yeast infection, a bacterial infection, or even recent intimacy can cause inflammation that leads to an abnormal result. In many cases, these cells return to normal on their own over time.
Depending on the specific type of abnormal cells found and your health history, we may recommend a few different next steps. One common approach is simply to repeat the Pap smear in a few months to see if the cells have cleared up.
If more information is needed, we may perform a colposcopy. During this procedure, which is performed right here in our office, we use a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope to get a closer look at your cervix. It feels very similar to a standard pelvic exam. If we see any areas that look unusual, we may take a small sample of tissue, called a biopsy, for further testing.
In many cases, an abnormal Pap smear is linked to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a very common virus, and most people will have it at some point in their lives. We often test for HPV alongside your Pap smear. Knowing if the virus is present helps us determine how closely we need to monitor your cervical health.
The most important thing to remember is that an abnormal Pap smear is a success for preventive medicine. It allows us to find and treat minor changes before they ever become a serious problem. By staying on top of your follow-up appointments, you’re taking the best possible care of your future health.
If you have questions about your recent test results or need to schedule your annual screening, we’re here for you. Call Ramos Women's Wellness or contact us online today to book your appointment.
